Will You “Make a Difference” for a Transplant Patient

It's been almost a year since James received his transplants. He has been able to stay out of the hospital for several months now. At first he was back in the hospital about every two weeks for at least a week at a time.

James is still in need of your prayers and any support you find that you can make to his huge medical bills. (Please be sure to mark on the check or form of payment "In Honor of James Redman" or it will not go to his account. Thank you.) While James is feeling so much better, he will be on the medicine to keep his organs from rejecting for the rest of his life. I hope you will decide to “Make a Difference” for James. You see my nephew had a kidney/pancreas transplant after having diabetes since age nine and being on dialysis for over a year. Most people don't realize that transplants are tremendously expensive—the one James had could cost as much as $396,000 over his lifetime. That is almost an impossible amount of money for any family to come up with so I was asked to help with the fundraising end of his surgery. Of course, I said, “Yes.”

The fundraiser is through a national fundraising group called the National Transplant Assistance Fund & Catastrophic Injury Program (NTAF) and is based out of Radnor, Pennsylvania. All funds are sent to NTAF and they distribute any funds back to the family. Any funds over and above what is needed by James will be used by others in the area that need assistance.

Please copy off the forms so that you can send any contributions directly to the National Fundraiser Organization.

Here is the cover letter from James' Mom, Carol Redman:

I’d like to tell you about my son, James Redman.

James grew up in Tucson where he played Little League baseball and performed in the Tucson Boys Chorus. James attended University High School for two years and then Tucson High School for his junior and senior years. As a young adult he served as a Sunday school teacher and Acolyte Advisor at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. He worked at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, with University Physicians, Inc., and with the Amphitheater Public School District. He completed his education by earning a BS in Business Administration/BA in Management and finally an MBA from the University of Phoenix. James had been living in California for the last eight years where he was employed at MTI Marketing in Carlsbad and then Pulse Engineering in San Diego.

James in now in a fight for his life. He is no stranger to medical issues since he has had Type 1, insulin-dependent diabetes since the age of nine. His situation has taken a turn for the worse as he is now in end stage renal failure and must have hemodialysis three times per week. Because he also suffers from hypoglycemia unawareness, James does not recognize low blood sugar and can become incoherent, have seizures, and lose consciousness, requiring immediate medical intervention. Doctors have determined that James must have a kidney/pancreas transplant to regain an independent and productive life.

Because of his fragile medical condition, James is not currently employable and cannot live alone. He has returned to Tucson, Arizona, where he can reside with family. While James currently has COBRA health insurance coverage, it will expire in the near future. Medicare coverage will not cover his costs and insurance premiums will be prohibitive. James is under the care of several physicians and specialists, and medication and physician co-pays are also overwhelming.

To help defray James’ uninsured medical expenses, a fundraising campaign has been established in his honor with the National Transplant Assistance Fund (NTAF). NTAF is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that has been providing direct assistance to the transplant community for 25 years. All donations are tax-deductible and are administered for transplant-related expenses only.
